Dallas' Affordable Housing Crisis
Cost-burdened households have little money remaining to pay for other basic necessities, including food, health care, education expenses and clothing. Children are at risk for malnutrition, and an unexpected expense or a loss of a job could mean an inability to make rent or pay a mortgage — forcing families to live in unstable transitional housing or worse, on the streets.
Dallas Habitat’s Unique Solution
Dallas Habitat utilizes an innovative model to create affordable housing opportunities, revitalize neighborhoods and generate new revenue for the city. This model differs from traditional economic and development models – it is uniquely ‘Habinomics.’
The ‘Habinomics’ Difference
Dallas Habitat accomplishes its mission by involving and empowering the community to create affordable housing solutions. By bringing together public and private funding, community leadership and vision, and thousands of volunteers, we are able to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to deserving families.
‘Habinomics’ also differs from other solutions in several key ways:
- Qualified families are able to purchase a tangible asset at below cost with no cash down payment. Mortgages are held by Dallas Habitat and are interest free – 0% for 25 years - saving families $105,000 over the duration of thier loan.
- Principle payments made by current homeowners are placed into a revolving fund, the Fund for Humanity, and are used to build more Habitat homes.
- Habitat homebuyers are prepared for homeownership success by attending Homebuyer Education classes where they learn budgeting and home maintenance skills
- Over 10,000 volunteers per year give of their time and skill – contributing over $12 million in value to the community.
