Our Solution
The City of Dallas currently has thousands of low-income households in dire need of affordable housing options. Earning less than 50% of the Dallas Average Median Income (AMI), these hardworking families frequently have no choice but to spend unsustainable levels of income on housing and/or live in dangerous conditions in substandard housing. Many are spending 50% or more of their income on shelter.
Cost-burdened households have little money remaining to pay for other basic necessities, including food, health care, education expenses and clothing. Children are at risk for malnutrition, and an unexpected expense or a loss of a job could mean an inability to make rent or pay a mortgage — forcing families to live in unstable transitional housing or worse, on the streets.
Dallas Habitat’s Unique Solution
The ‘Habinomics’ Difference ‘Habinomics’ also differs from other solutions in several key ways:

Success is Measurable
Community Impact Since our incorporation in 1986, over 627 Habitat homes in 20 neighborhoods across Dallas County have yielded $53 million in new property value to the tax rolls. In 2007 alone, Habitat homeowners paid $800,000 in property taxes.
In 2007, we will remit up to $500,000 in building, water, and sewer permits to build over 70 homes. Additionally, donations benefit the local economy through job creation, a rise in property values and direct purchases of building materials and services.
