Our History

Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity became an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 1985. Only one house was built in the first three years.  Since that time we have grown to become the largest non-profit builder and sixth largest builder in the City of Dallas, constructing over 70 homes per year.

Our growth phase began in 1989 when 24 lots in East Garrett Park were generously donated.  This kicked off a steady increase in construction activity to achieve our goal of eliminating substandard housing in Dallas.

Neighborhood development and revitalization has steadily progressed in East, South and West Dallas. Dallas Habitat and its partners have built mixed income and Habitat centered communities in Pleasant Grove and West Dallas, and the neighborhoods of St. Philips, City Place, South Fair Park, Bon Ton, Grand Prairie and many more continue to be uplifted by an influx of new homeowner occupied residences.

Sincere thanks to the sponsors, volunteers and supporters who have enabled Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity to make a significant impact on over 600 local families in over 20 communities.  Your contributions are the foundation of our success.

Notable Accomplishments since 2002 include:

  • Built 100 homes in Greenleaf Village – a 305-home, mixed-income, multi-racial development in West Dallas with partners City of Dallas, HUD’s Self-help Homeownership Program (SHOP), Dallas Housing Authority, and KB Home/American CityVista.
  • Built 38 homes in West Dallas to revitalize one of five City of Dallas Neighborhood Improvement Program targeted census tracts.
  • Developed a 4.5 acre tract of land in east Dallas where 25 homes were built between 2005 and 2006 with partner SHOP near adjacent 39-home Habitat project on Shayna Drive.
  • Built 33 homes in historic Joppa neighborhood of southeast Dallas, 20 of which were “blitz built” over one week in May 2006.
  • Built 26 homes in Fair Park neighborhood of South Dallas with partner nonprofit InnerCity Development Corporation and City of Dallas.
  • Built 23 homes in Bon Ton neighborhood of South Dallas.
  • Partnered with nonprofit developers Builder of Hope and Operation Relief Community Development Corporation to acquire City of Dallas Land Bank and Land Transfer program lots in West Dallas and Bon Ton.
  • Renovated and occupied a 133,000 square foot facility in May 2004 to house all staff, construction operations, storage and a Home Improvement Outlet Store, allowing for administrative efficiencies and decreasing the organization’s overhead.

Habitat for Humanity International.

Each local Habitat affiliate operates as an independent nonprofit organization, and in partnership with Habitat for Humanity International.  A portion of local donations are given to Habitat International as a tithe to build homes for deserving families worldwide.

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller.  Like its local affiliates, Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need.

I and my daughters, Alexis and Victoria, are very excited and would like to thank Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and everyone who makes it possible for families like us to have a home of our own.
